a fête blanche on the square: live guest portraits at mac’s chophouse
Local Roots & Tuesday Nights // It’s not often that I get to paint live guest portraits right in my own backyard. When the events director for Mac’s Chophouse reached out about providing a unique party favor for their Fête Blanche, I jumped at the chance.
Logistically, painting live portraits at a Tuesday night event is a bit of a puzzle with five kids.. soccer practices and dance classes to juggle! But Mac’s Chophouse and Raw Bar are near and dear to my heart. It’s our favorite Marietta Square date night spot on those rare occasions when we’re able to secure a sitter, and on many a Spring Saturday afternoon, you’ll find our family of 7 on their busy patio, sharing oysters and bubbly. Needless to say, we dropped everything so that I could be there for this event!
The Familiar Charm of Downtown Marietta // I love exploring venues across North Georgia, but there is something deeply grounding about working in your hometown. I didn't need a GPS; I knew exactly where to park and which brick walkways would lead me to the second-floor private event space.
The staff greeted me with such hospitality and showed me to a table bathed in natural light from the large windows overlooking the Square. With a perfect view of the busy pedestrians below, I set up my “studio” and grabbed some video footage of the space which was decked out in all white.
Wine, Watercolor, and Intimate Moments // The Fête Blanche was an intimate wine dinner—five courses, each perfectly paired with a different wine. The event host gave a presentation on the flavor notes of each wine, it's region of origin, history, ets. Because the guest list was limited to 40, I was able to trade my usual "speed painting" pace for a more relaxed, conversational flow.
As a result, I was able to accommodate special requests which is always a joy. One couple loved their joint portrait so much that they were fighting over who would take it home. I was happy to paint a second version so they could both have a memento of the night. I also had the pleasure of painting a mother-daughter duo—twice! While I usually limit duplicates to ensure every guest gets a turn, the intimate nature of this dinner allowed for those extra personal touches.
A Sweet Tradition // As 9:00 PM approached, the hostess brought out a plate of coconut cake bites. I promptly boxed them up to bring home as I always do. My babies have come to expect a "taste of the party" the next morning, so I bring home any wedding cake or dessert that I receive at the event for us all to share. :)
I was so thrilled to be a part of this intimate affair. Connecting with local business owners and neighbors right here in my hometown truly made my month. If you ever have the chance to attend a wine dinner at Mac’s or just want the best oysters on the half-shell in North Georgia, this sweet joint and local favorite does not disappoint.
